As both a staff writer and freelancer, I have helped my employers and clients create, refine and publish a wide variety of written and online materials.  Regardless of the details for any given assignment, I always kept three ideals in mind:

• Before a message can deliver value, it must be tailored to the needs of both the audience and the source.  I must always create content, images, graphics and written materials in language, format and imagery which my audience will not only understand, but will also respect and advance my client's unique identity.
• Any given client, and audience member, has multiple demands upon his/her time, money and energy.  I must always deliver a service or product worthy of whatever my client and audience have invested in working with me.
• The quality of my work should be a compelling reason to work with me again.  The vast majority of my business comes from return clients, and word of mouth referrals.  That only happens if I have delivered services and products which helped my clients advance their goals, and overcome their obstacles.

Even scientists need good marketing materials.  Science-based companies still need customers, non-profits need donors, government agencies and public service organizations need funding.  A solid library of marketing and copywriting materials can help deliver that funding.  I can help clients develop a comprehensive marketing plan for their particular circumstances, or I can help complete an existing plan with add-on written or online materials.

Newspaper, Magazine and Trade Journal
Article Summaries

Many companies, agencies, non-profits and organizations would like their employees to stay current on the latest news and developments in their particular industry or specialty.  While that is a noble goal, the sheer volume of information available these days can be overwhelming.  Having a single source of curated, relevant information can be a wonderful resource for employees, and can save them the time and hassle of finding all that information for themselves. 

That's where I can help. 

I can work with you to assemble respected sources of information, create weekly, monthly or quarterly summaries of relevant news articles, and present those summaries in an easy-to-digest format so that your employees can stay up to speed.  I can even provide keywords and index terms so that employees can look up specific pieces of information with minimal effort.

My early work with Biosis was for a service very similar to this.  Their BioBusiness subscription product covered hundreds of trade journals, magazines, peer review journals and newspapers.  Editors such as myself would review those publications, searching for any articles related to business activity within the biological sciences.  For each relevant article, I'd then write a summary and compile a list of keywords for the index.  While that subscription service is long gone, I still have some clippings from my work with that product.  Click here to see examples.

Technical Reports, Case Studies and White Papers, Oh My!

As our society becomes more tech-driven, more technical information must be delivered to the lay public in understandable language.  Whether the audience is composed of stock holders, share holders, clients, students, regulators or the general public, these technical documents need to be carefully tailored to provide exactly what their client needs to say, in language that their intended audience can understand and digest. 

That's where I come in.  I can help translate the most complex information into terms and language suitable for any audience.

Magazine and Trade Journal Articles

Magazines and trade journals are an excellent way to provide in-depth coverage of a company's products and services, performance in the field, track record with past projects, and/or future endeavors.  Except many organizations don't have the personnel to create such in-depth articles.  They are very time-intensive to create, require close collaboration with the publication which runs them, and often require additional photos, graphics, videos or recordings.  Even if staff writers can create such pieces, those pieces must be carefully edited to match any given journal's submission guidelines.  That's why so many such articles are outsourced.  I can provide:

• initial topic research, including public records, historical records, and old newspaper articles
• personal interviews with any relevant clients, personnel, agency officials and other interested parties
• Layout, formatting, style guide consistency and journal submission adherence

I can also coordinate photography and video creation, formatting and editing, graphics creation and other audio/visual augmentation.

Books and E-books

It seems like everyone is writing a book these days.  What most people don't see is all the behind-the scenes work that goes into creating a book.  That's true whether an aspiring author plans to work with a publisher, or plans to self-publish through one of the assorted publishing platforms.  It's not just the content - it's the layout, the photos, the graphics, the table of contents and index and cover art and 101 other details which most of us take for granted.  Having already written and self-published two of my own books, I can help aspiring authors bring their title to life.  Contact me to discuss your book idea!
