Writing Samples and Writing Clips

One of the first questions that come up in conversation with a potential new client, is "can I see some clips?"  For good reason - nothing proves ability better than past accomplishments.  In the spirit of sharing, I've put together a wide range of clips and samples here for anyone interested in such things.  Feel free to download any of the PDFs if they suit your purposes; just please provide attribution back to this website.  Enjoy!

PS - I have tried to provide a lot of variety here, but it's certainly not a complete collection.  If you're looking for something in particular, Contact Me and let me know what you're looking for.  I'll look through my files to see what I might have to suit your needs.

Newspaper Articles

I have been a staffmember for the following print newspapers:

  • Collegiate Times, a campus paper published in Boulder, Colorado
  • Big Sky Business Journal, a business weekly published in Billings, Montana
  • Magic City Reader, a weekly paper published in Billings, Montana
  • Billings Outpost, a weekly paper published in Billings, Montana

While most of my articles for these papers were physical clippings, I have transcribed some of them to PDF format.  I could not transfer over the actual article images because of excessive pixelation, but I have recreated them as best I could.  I'm happy to share originals if needed.

Environmental Site Assessments

I freelanced for Huntingdon Chen Northern in 1995 to help them clear a backlog of environmental site assessments for regional commercial companies.  The bulk of our office's assignments at that time revolved around testing and/or removal of underground petroleum storage tanks, to prevent and/or mitigate nearby water contamination prior to the subject properties being sold.  As such, the vast majority of my environmental site assessments were proprietary property of the business entities which commissioned them.  The only times ESAs generally enter the public domain is when they are used as evidence in a lawsuit and/or during regulatory enforcement activities.  As a result, I am not at liberty to share ESAs which have not yet been made public.  Nevertheless, I was able to find an environmental site assessment published by one of our sister offices, which provides a very good example of the work we were doing at that time.  I share it here with full disclosure that I was not involved with this particular ESA.  However, it is a very good example of the work our office was doing at that time.

Business Profiles

I have written a number of business profiles, for both newspapers and business clients.  Here are a few of them:

Good Earth Market Sees Better Days Ahead

VEDP Aquaculture Profiles (pages 36 - 43)

DIY Guides

I manage and write content for a hydroponics how-to website, offering DIY information for hobbyists and small-scale hydroponic producers.  The following is a multi-page series on one form of hydroponic production known as flood-and-drain.  This series explains the method, its pro's and con's, and how it can be used in small-scale production.

Peer Review Journal Submissions and other Academia publications

Editage offers a translation and editing service for foreign-language academic researchers, so that those researchers can publish their research findings in English-language peer-review journals.  As a contractor for Editage, I would review the raw translation and edit as needed to meet current best practices for academic research articles.  I would also ensure the translation met each specific journal's article submission guidelines.  The original authors would then submit the articles to various peer-reviewed academic journals, conferences and symposiums.    I have offered several of those projects below:

Organic Melon Production Using Crop Rotation Principles

Typhoon Modeling for Korea and the Western Pacific Basin

A New Battery Cathode Chemistry Suitable for Use With EVs and Utility Energy Storage
